Honest answers

The questions parents actually ask.

Elterngeld is the German state's parental allowance. It is a monthly payment for parents who take time off work, or cut their hours, to care for a newborn. Both parents share up to 14 months of it, and depending on your previous income it ranges from €300 to €1,800 per month.

You have 3 months after birth. Then you start losing money.

Each missed month is €300 to €1,800 you can never claim back. The Elterngeldstelle won't remind you, and there's no extension. Most expats lose 1 to 2 months simply because nobody told them about the 3-month rule.
