- I have read about this for hours and I still do not understand Basis versus Plus. Which is right for us?Plus is capped at half of Basis but runs twice as long (§ 4a Abs. 2 BEEG), and it keeps more of what you earn in a month. Which one wins depends on your months, not on a rule of thumb.
- Every calculator gives me a different number. Are we going to end up on the minimum?Calculators use your gross pay. The office uses a BEEG net from the 12 months that count (§ 2b, § 2c BEEG), and which months those are moves the number more than anything else.
- I have a small business on the side. Does that change how my income is counted?Yes. Any self-employed income moves the whole assessment to your last tax year, salary included (§ 2b Abs. 3 BEEG). That can help or hurt, and there is an opt out on request (§ 2b Abs. 4).
- The baby is here and the three month deadline is close. What has to go in first?Elterngeld is paid back only for the three Lebensmonate before the month your application arrives (§ 7 Abs. 1 BEEG). The application goes in first, missing documents can follow.
