Midijob and Elterngeld: Lower Deductions, Same Rules

Elterngeld Help·Reviewed 31 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • •A Midijob pays more than the Minijob limit (603 € a month in 2026) and no more than 2,000 € a month.
  • •For Elterngeld, social contributions on Midijob pay are deducted from a reduced base, not from the full gross pay (§ 2f Abs. 2 Satz 3 BEEG). That raises your Elterngeld-Netto.
  • •The same rule applies before the birth (higher Elterngeld) and to Midijob income during Elterngeld (income that is offset).
  • •With several jobs, your total pay decides whether you are in the Midijob range.
  • •The 32-hour limit and the income offset work exactly as for any other part-time job.

What a Midijob is

A Midijob is employment in the so-called transition range (Übergangsbereich): your regular pay is above the Minijob limit and no more than 2,000 € a month (§ 20 Abs. 2 SGB IV). In 2026 the Minijob limit is 603 €, so the range runs from 603.01 € to 2,000 €. If you have several jobs, your total pay counts. For Elterngeld, the classification is taken from your payslips.

Midijob before the birth: a higher Elterngeld-Netto

Elterngeld does not use the net pay on your payslip. It calculates its own Elterngeld-Netto with flat social contribution rates: 9 percent for health and long-term care insurance, 10 percent for pension insurance and 2 percent for unemployment insurance, depending on which insurances you were compulsorily insured in (§ 2f Abs. 1 BEEG).

For Midijob pay, these rates are not applied to your full gross pay but to a lower, specially calculated amount (§ 2f Abs. 2 Satz 3 BEEG). The deduction for social contributions is therefore smaller, your Elterngeld-Netto is higher, and so is your Elterngeld. Tax deductions are calculated as usual.

For comparison: on Minijob pay, no social contributions are deducted at all (§ 2f Abs. 2 Satz 2 BEEG).

Midijob during Elterngeld

You can keep or take up a Midijob while receiving Elterngeld, as long as you work no more than 32 hours a week on average in each life month. Your Midijob income is offset like any other income from work (§ 2 Abs. 3 BEEG), and the same reduced base is used for social contributions.

Midijob income during Elterngeld is also part of the average across all months of the same type. See One average for all months.

If you want the Partnerschaftsbonus, you need between 24 and 32 hours a week. A Midijob can meet that, but the hours decide, not the pay.
